Sheltair Aviation has selected BDG Construction and AECOM to manage the design and build their multimillion dollar new hangar construction project that will break ground early this fall at Republic Airport, East Farmingdale, New York, some 35 miles east of Manhattan.
Reviewed and approved by state transportation officials and reflecting the pro-business policies of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, Sheltair intends to build as much as 210,000 square feet of hangar space to accommodate the latest large corporate jets whose fuel efficient designs and overall size require higher and wider facilities. The FBO currently operates a 66,000 square foot facility that, while thoroughly modernized, was originally built during World War II for the manufacturing of P-47 Thunderbolts.
“We are delighted to be able to partner with two extremely reputable and established leaders in their respective fields,” stated Todd Anderson, Sheltair Senior Vice President for Real Estate and Development. “AECOM is an internationally recognized expert in the field of infrastructure engineering, and BDG Construction, based on Long Island, has built a broad spectrum of commercial and aviation space throughout the New York metropolitan region, perhaps one of the most challenging places in the nation to break ground. We know we have a winning team and we are looking forward to starting construction soon.”
Warren Kroeppel, Sheltair’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) reminded, “This aviation construction project is a significant financial commitment by Sheltair that reflects our confidence in Governor Cuomo’s decision to make New York far more business friendly and his commitment to specifically assist general aviation by approving a number of tax exemptions for this sector of the economy.”
Anderson further noted, “This project will enable Sheltair to offer its clients brand new 21st century, state-of-the-art facilities that will able to best meet the needs of current and future general aviation aircraft. It also underscores the role of Republic Airport as an efficient and convenient New York destination for corporate America. Our recently signed contracts with BDG Construction and AECOM are proof positive of our faith in the future of our leadership role in New York.”
BDG Construction Vice President Brad Blumenfeld stated, “We are delighted to have been selected to be part of the Sheltair team. Having built many technically complex facilities elsewhere in New York we know this is an exacting assignment requiring close attention to detail, strict adherence to regulations and tight deadlines. It’s great to see facilities like this going up in the region, it’s a sign that the economy is has legs.”
"AECOM is proud to be the designer as part of this powerful team of Sheltair and BDG Construction whose combined efforts will significantly strengthen the ability of Republic Airport to welcome a new generation of corporate jets to Long Island,” said AECOM’s Jennifer Rimmer, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Long Island lead. “Their arrival will create new business opportunities that will further strengthen this dynamic market."
